TRACING MOVEMENT REBOOT 2020

An initiative set up by Stuart Winter

Tracing Movement Reboot has been an invaluable resource for an industry that has been decimated by the Covid pandemic. It was made possible thanks to donations from Sybil Robson Orr and actor/Producer Peter Land, And the support of Jerwood Space. Stuart gave free dance class to over 100 dancers at Jerwood Space over a period of two weeks in October 2020, including principals and leading dancers from: The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, Hamilton, Mary Poppins, Mamma Mia, Hello Dolly, Frozen and many more West End and UK shows. The project also included 2020 graduates from Bird College, Laine Theatre Arts, Performers College, Urdang Academy and Millennium Theatre Arts whose training was left incomplete by the pandemic.

Film-maker James Harris made a documentary about the process, interviewing dancers about their experiences, the difficulties they are facing and how a project like this can make a difference. Tracing Movement then employed six of the dancers from the programme to make a short dance film, shot on the empty stage of the Theatre Royal, Stratford East. Stuart believes it is important not only to provide physical maintenance for the dance community, but to create opportunities and offer paid employment where possible. Rebound was released online at the beginning of December 2020. The photos below were taken by Robin Kent at Jerwood Space, London.
